Lemina and George voted Players of the Season

Mario Lemina and Tammi George’s impressive seasons in gold and black have been honoured with the pair voted as Wolves’ Supporters’ Player of the Season for the men’s and women’s first-teams.

There were also prizes for Nelson Semedo, Pablo Sarabia, Katie Johnson and Beth Merrick as the achievements of both teams were celebrated on the Molineux turf after Wolves’ final home Premier League fixture of the season against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Ahead of the players undertaking a lap of appreciation around the pitch, the End of Season Awards were presented, with eight prizes handed out in front of supporters – including four awards voted for by fans on wolves.co.uk.

Supporters voted for Lemina as their men’s Player of the Season following his first full campaign for the Old Gold as the Gabon international enjoyed one of the best years of his career in the centre of the Wolves midfield.

After playing a pivotal role in helping to keep Wolves up last season, he has excelled in the current campaign – at both ends of the pitch. As well as being one of the best in the Premier League for tackles, Lemina also produced the best goalscoring season of his career, while showing his versatility in stepping up to cover for his injured teammates in a variety of positions.

For the first time since 2018/19, the fans and players were divided on who should win Players’ Player of the Season and it was Semedo who received the accolades from his teammates, with the full-back picking up the gong having arguably produced his most consistent campaigns at Molineux.

The Portuguese has started all but two Premier League matches this season – due to suspension and injury – and has shown the reason why Wolves made the 30-year-old their then-record signing when he joined from Barcelona four years ago, while scoring a vital goal in the FA Cup third round replay at home to Brentford.

Supporters also had the chance to vote for the men’s Goal of the Season award, with the close-run contest seeing Sarabia’s incredible control and volleyed effort against Tottenham Hotspur coming out on top.

The former Real Madrid and PSG forward overcame the challenge of Matheus Cunha and his stunning solo effort against Nottingham Forest to claim the award with 39 per cent of the public vote. Bringing a fizzed Cunha cross under his control with a brilliant first touch, the second – with his opposite foot – saw the ball fire into the net, to set Wolves on their way to a late come-from-behind victory.

After picking up both women’s first-team awards voted by the fans at last year’s ceremony, George made it successive Player of the Season titles after starring once again in the heart of Dan McNamara’s side.

The dynamic midfielder came out on top of a tight battle with several of her teammates to claim the prize, in a season where she came out second top scorer in Old Gold with 11 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions – including a goal of the season contender.

It was Johnson who was selected by her teammates for the Players’ Player of the Season, after the youngster produced excellent performances in her first full season playing as a defender following a full-time transition from attacking midfield.

Johnson’s move to centre-back has proved to be a masterstroke, with the athletic 21-year-old – who has spent her entire career in gold and black – effortlessly stepping up as a rock in Wolves’ last line of defence, as she utilises her speed and determination to bully the opposition forwards.

The prize voted by Wolves fans which had the biggest winning margin was the women’s Goal of the Season, as Merrick’s long-range thunderbolt against Nottingham Forest not only secured the winger the trophy, but also gave McNamara’s side all three points in one of the most incredible games of the year.

Having found themselves 3-0 down heading towards the hour mark, Wolves brought themselves back on level terms by the time 90 minutes arrived, before Merrick – who had already scored in the match – stepped up and curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner to send New Bucks Head wild.

There was also the trophy given out for Academy Player of the Season to 18-year-old striker Dani Angel. The young Spaniard has been a revelation since arriving at the club from grassroots side Clapham FC in London in October, where his goalscoring exploits guided Richard Walker’s side to a third-place finish in the league, while earning him an international debut with Spain under-18s.

While men's midfielder Tommy Doyle - who will become a permanent Wolves player in the summer - and women's defender Ellie Wilson were named PFA Community Champions following their work this season in helping to making a difference in the local area, outside of the football pitch.

Following the award ceremony, both the men’s and women’s first-teams joined together after the awards were handed out to enjoy a lap of appreciation around Molineux as Wolves’ home Premier League campaign came to a close for another season.
