Jan Vertonghen’s injury time header earnt his team the 2-1 win, but the Wolves captain believed his side dominated proceedings at Molineux, and with a bit more composure at both ends of the pitch would have taken the victory.
On defeat to Tottenham
“We’re really gutted in there; distraught. It’s something that we’ve got to look at, but from start to finish I thought we were fantastic. We pressed them, we had the ball for most of the game, and dominated a team like Tottenham, so it’s disappointing to come away from the game with nothing, not a win and not even a draw.
“We should’ve won it with the amount of chances we had, the amount of times we nullified them, and they’ve going to come away really happy with what they’ve done today because they’ve got the win.
“We stopped a team like Tottenham with the players they’ve got, we nullified them, but they scored two goals – the second one is really disappointing. We managed the game well, but we’ve got to do more and could’ve won the game. It’s as simple as that.”
On conceding an injury time goal
“When a team like that come to Molineux and we do what we did; I felt like we dominated from start to finish, that’s how I felt when I was playing. I didn’t feel like they had much, so it’s disappointing from our point of view, but we’ve got to pick ourselves up and keep moving forward.
“We’ve just looked back at [the second goal] and I think it was Vertonghen’s first movement into the box, so I think that’s caught up by surprise, but we have to be responsive as players and take authority on the pitch and we haven’t done that.
“We gave him too much space and he was able to head it into the corner. We have to look at that to get better.”
On being overtaken in the league table
“It’s not about who overtakes whoever, it’s Christmas time and it’s all about winning games and making sure we’re improving with every game. We’ve improved again today, but we conceded two goals which we shouldn’t concede – the last one in particular.
“We’ve got to manage the game better, it’s as simple as that, and from our point of view it’s disappointing, but if you look at the game as a whole, we’ve dominated a top team like Tottenham.
“You’ve got to take the positives in this league when you come up against a team like that with top class players.”
On Adama Traore’s influence
“He’s outstanding, he’s been outstanding all season, he’s contributing a lot to this team and he’s a fantastic footballer, but more importantly, a brilliant person.
“We were a bit gutted with the amount of fouls they put in on him, they’re just going for him one after another and the referees are telling us they can’t do anything about it – which I understand to an extent, but it’s just relentless.”
On the support of the Molineux crowd
“This club’s amazing, absolutely amazing. Where it’s come from in the last couple of years is down to the staff and the manager. Since they’ve come in, they’ve been absolutely amazing, the way the club’s moving forward, and the crowd are with us every single game.
“They’re the best crowd in the Premier League, they really are. The way they support us, they’re with us, they sing, they do everything they can to push us, and we can’t thank them enough.”
