Half-back power was a vital ingredient in Wolves’ success in the 1950s and the epitome of it was Ron Flowers, a product of their Yorkshire nursery club, Wath Wanderers.
Firm in the tackle, he could also create chances for others or power through a defence to score some spectacular goals.
He rarely had a poor game after establishing his place in the side who in 1954 made Wolves champions of England for the first time. He figured in the famous floodlit wins over Spartak, Honved and Real Madrid. He also played in the title-winning teams of 1957–8 and 1958–9 as well as the 1960 FA Cup-winning side. He later switched to a more defensive role for club and country, having won the first of his 49 caps in 1955. He had a poor England debut but came back to play in 40 successive games, a run bettered only by his clubmate Billy Wright. Flowers also skippered his country three times and became their most successful penalty taker with six out of six. He once scored in four successive internationals.
