When Wolves were at their lowest ebb and needed a talisman they found one in Steve Bull.
He was signed from Albion along with Andy Thompson and the pair were key men in the club’s return to respectability. As Wolves won the Fourth Division and Third Division titles in successive seasons, plus the Sherpa Van Trophy, Bull wrote his name into English football history. He became the only player ever to score a half century of goals for his club in successive seasons. The fans loved him, not only for his ability to score goals from all angles and distance but because he never gave less than 100 per cent. In 1989, he joined a select band of Third Division players to be capped for England when he came on as sub and scored against Scotland. That was the first of four international goals in 13 appearances, most of them as sub. His actual time on the pitch for England amounted to about six and a half games. When injury ended his career, Bull had scored 306 goals and collected 18 hat-tricks – club records. He was awarded the MBE in 1999.
