Golden Chance is a project designed by Wolves, with the aim to to provide young footballers around the world with a life changing experience. The programme was launched in May 2019 when 100 youngsters aged between 15 and 18 battled it out in Hong Kong under the eye of our under-23 head coach and other Academy staff.
USA
In the summer of 2022 and 2023 Wolves embarked on an experiment to find undiscovered players, who may typically fall out of the system, who would get the opportunity to train with the Wolves under-21 squad during their US tour. With some players having to pay to play or access coaching, Wolves invited a group of players to the Golden Chance trial in Phoenix, Arizona to be able to scout en masse, footballers from a wide variety of backgrounds, who they typically wouldn't be able to pick up through traditional recruitment.
In the second part of the trial, two of the most promising players were invited to be a part of our training camp to see how they matched up to the talent in a Premier League Academy. See how they got on below!
There will be further opportunities for players in America to get the Golden Chance, with talent spotted in Chicago and Arizona joining up with the Wolves squad in the upcoming TST tournament!
Malaysia
In the latest instalment, aspiring players spotted during a training camp in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia were given the opportunity to travel to the UK, experience first-class coaching, facilities and advice as they look to further their careers.
While they were at Compton, they had to the chance to attend an U21s game and meet Hee Chan Hwang, a huge inspiration to Asian players, and Justin Hubner, who has taken a unique route to go on to represent Indonesia at the Asian Cup. We also hear from Harry Birtwistle, whose journey into the game has many parallels to the Golden Chance participants. After first being spotted at a Soccer School in Singapore, Harry made the most of being invited over to Wolverhampton for trials and has signed professional terms with the club!
