U18 report | Man Utd 2-2 Wolves

Man Utd 2 (Mather 40, Lacey 72) Wolves 2 (Edozie 58, Plank 79)

Dom Plank’s stunning solo goal secured a point on the road, as Wolves under-18s twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Manchester United.

Sam Mather and Shea Lacey gave the home side the lead on two separate occasions, but Tom Edozie and substitute Plank struck back for the old gold.

It was the Red Devils who created the best openings in the first 45 minutes, with Ethan Williams curling an effort which flashed narrowly wide, before a neat team move saw Jaydan Kamason’s strike well-held by Palmi Arinbjornsson.

The deadlock was broken just five minutes before the interval as Travis Binnion’s side took lead through Mather, who picked up the ball before firing a fine effort that flashed across Arinbjornsson and into the net.

Wolves looked to respond immediately and went close, as Edozie weaved his way through the United penalty area and struck an effort just over the top of the bar.

The visitors were rewarded with an equaliser just shy of the hour mark when Edozie, who had already threatened, drove at the heart of the home defence before slotting a precise effort into the far corner past Elyh Harrison.

However, United were only on level terms for 14 minutes and regained the lead through the first of two fine solo goals for either side. Lacey produced a moment of magic when he kept close control of the ball and opted to go on the outside of Wolves’ left-hand side, before getting to the byline and, from an acute angle, scooping the ball into the roof of the net.

James McPike’s side kept battling away and weren’t in any mood to lie down, as they equalised for the second time with 11 minutes left on the clock.

This time, it was the substitute Plank who took matters into his own hands and decided to take advantage of the space afforded to him. After starting a run in his own half, Plank charged forward and made his way across the edge of the box, before shooting low with his left boot and into the opposite corner.

Wolves looked to win it late on and forced Harrison into a save to deny Plank once again, as the youngster was kept out by a strong glove to ensure the points were shared.
