Lionesses win Arnold Clark Cup at Molineux

A bumper crowd of 14,463 turned out to watch the Lionesses defeat rivals Germany and lift the Arnold Clark Cup at Molineux.

The round robin tournament went down to the final day, with Molineux hosting both England vs Germany and Spain’s clash with Canada earlier in the day, and the supporters who turned out weren’t short of entertainment.

Canada were poised to claim the trophy in the early kick-off, but a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain opened the door for the evening’s winner to take top spot in the group and claim the honours, and England duly obliged with a 3-1 win.

The Lionesses, who’d also played at Middlesbrough and Norwich City, had their biggest crowd yet waiting for them at Molineux, and they made the perfect start when Ellen White was sent through on 15 minutes and made no mistake, slotting home her 49th international goal.

However, Germany were well fancied before a ball was kicked in the tournament, and a piece of magic from Lina Magull drew them level four minutes before the break, as her free-kick flew in off the underside of the crossbar.

Throughout the contest Lauren Hemp shone on the left wing and, with five minutes remaining, her marauding run carved through the Germans and set up Millie Bright, who made no mistake to fire home in front of the South Bank - a goal which earned her the Golden Boot award.

That goal saw Sarina Wiegman’s side nip ahead of Spain at the top of the group on goals scored, but the icing on the cake arrived in added time on the break, as Fran Kirby led and finished a brisk counter attack to ensure the Arnold Clark would remain on English soil.
