After signing up to the Hedgehog Friendly Football League back in March, Wolves are now marching on in the Hobsons Hedgehog Cup and have reached the quarter-final stage.
The league was set up by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to see professional clubs compete to become the most hedgehog friendly in the country – the clubs taking part see hedgehog welfare as important and want to make stadiums and training grounds across the country more wildlife friendly.
Wolves, who run their own One Pack, One Planet campaign already, pledged to help protect hedgehogs in the wild and encourage fans to make green spaces – from parks to gardens – more biodiverse and welcoming for hedgehogs.
That work has carried the club to the last eight of the Hobsons Hedgehog Cup, where the Old Gold will face West Midlands neighbours Aston Villa.
The Hobsons Hedgehog Cup is a chance for teams in the league to win an actual piece of silverware. Clubs have been competing against each other, with the team scoring the most ‘goals’ within a given time progressing to the next round.
Wolves now need the help of their supporters, who can contribute in one of the following ways:
- Make sure hedgehogs have access to your garden – hedgehogs travel around a mile each night – that’s a lot of gardens. Joining this vital habitat up with 13x13cm square gaps (hedgehog highways) at the bottom of the fence or wall is a fantastic way to make sure hedgehogs can access and travel through your garden.
- Create a log pile or wild corner to provide valuable natural food and shelter for ‘hogs.
- Become a Hedgehog Champion! Currently the Hedgehog Street project (ran by BHPS in partnership with People’s Trust for Endangered Species) has almost 130,000 Champions, but we they need more! It’s free to sign up and you can opt in to receive a monthly email letting you know all that’s happening in the world of ‘hogs and how you can help them even more! Sign up at hedgehogstreet.org.
Fay Vass, CEO of BHPS, said: “We at The British Hedgehog Preservation Society are delighted that Wolves are part of our Hedgehog Friendly Football League and are taking the related Hobsons Hedgehog Cup competition by storm.”
