Internationals | Bueno makes Uruguay return

Wolves’ Santiago Bueno returned to the Uruguay fore over the weekend for the first time in 18 months.

The defender was handed a third senior cap when he came off the bench at half-time of his country’s World Cup qualifying draw with Paraguay. He helped his nation to a clean sheet in the goalless draw, which kept them second behind Argentina and looking good for the finals.

Also in that qualification process is Brazil and Wolves had a double representation on Saturday for their 1-0 victory over Ecuador. New Old Gold signing Andre played 85 minutes in midfield, before being replaced by Joao Gomes for the closing stages as they recorded a crucial win.

South Korea are also bidding to reach the 2026 World Cup currently and Hee Chan Hwang came off the bench in their 0-0 draw with Palestine. It meant South Korean began their six-team qualifying group with one point, rather than all three.

Over in Europe, the Nations League got underway and for Nelson Semedo, he added another two caps to his name. Having come off the bench at half-time in their win over Croatia, the right-back started on Sunday, as Portugal came from behind to beat Scotland. Jose Sa was an unused substitute on each occasion as Portugal won both games 2-1.

Matt Doherty and Republic of Ireland were facing England on Saturday evening, and the Wolves man played the first 58 minutes of their 2-0 defeat to the Three Lions at right-wing-back. They meet Greece next on Tuesday.

Norway were left frustrated as they began the Nations League with a 0-0 draw against Kazakhstan. Jorgen Strand Larsen played the final 20 minutes off the bench, but couldn’t win the game for his nation.

Elsewhere, Yerson Mosquera was an unused substitute for Colombia’s draw with Peru, while Carlos Forbs and Rodrigo Gomes have to wait until Monday evening for their only game of the international period with Portugal under-21s.
