The latest episode of the Official Wolves Podcast is out now, as hosts Dave Edwards and James Bird reflect on the first win of the Premier League season and a starring performance from Matheus Cunha.
Going on a deep dive into the tactics and intricacies of a well-earned three points against the Saints, the importance of the early goal and the relief which comes with getting off the mark for the campaign, Edwards compares the atmosphere at Molineux to Mick McCarthy’s last game in charge of Wolves against West Bromwich Albion back in 2012.
The pair also chat about whether the timing of the current international break is good or bad for Wolves and how the reaction to the Brentford loss has seen Gary O’Neil’s side go three games unbeaten and how they think a Wolves team who have renewed confidence will fare in their upcoming fixtures.
As well as giving their thoughts on what O’Neil changed at half-time to ensure Wolves produced a more impressive second half showing, Edwards also praises the impact of Craig Dawson, the way he changes his style compared to the strikers he comes up against and how his experience is helping others thrive, especially Santi Bueno.
But the main bulk of the episode is dedicated to a showing from Cunha which Edwards describes as the ‘best individual performance' he’s seen from a Wolves player in recent history
The former midfielder gets his tactics board out to analyse how the Brazilian is able to step up to the fore when needed and his left-wing partnership with Rayan Ait-Nouri.
There is also praise for the difference O’Neil has made in Cunha during his time at Wolves and how the head coach is playing to the strength of his best players, but there feel there are question marks on how he can find a balance between Cunha’s attacking prowess and his defensive responsibility to the team.
