After Gary O'Neil departed Wolves following defeat at home to Ipswich Town, Dave Edwards discusses what went wrong for the former head coach on the latest episode of Wolves Express.
Less than 24 hours after Saturday's 2-1 loss at Molineux, the club announced O'Neil and his backroom staff were to leave with Wolves currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table on just nine points from 16 matches, including a run of four consecutive defeats.
Old Gold legend Edwards - who is also host of the Official Wolves Podcast's 'Wolves Unpacked' - joined Monday's episode of Wolves Express to give his assessment on O'Neil's departure.
The midfielder, who made 307 appearances in gold and black, believed there was a sense of 'inevitability' around the change of a head coach following the heart-breaking last minute loss to the Tractor Boys, which left Wolves five points from safety.
Edwards discusses the timing of O'Neil's exit and whether a change in head coach should have been made sooner by the club's senior management, but feels the togetherness shown by the players towards O'Neil was a key factor in the change coming when it did - although he criticised the actions displayed by Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha following full-time against Ipswich.
With the task of replacing O'Neil before Sunday's trip to Leicester City now in the hands of the senior management, Edwards outlines what the new head coach will need to focus on if they hope to save Wolves from the drop this season, as well as how the next four games will be season-defining for the Old Gold.
Released three times a week – every Monday, Wednesday and Friday – Wolves Express is packed with news, updates and exclusive interviews on both the playing and non-playing side of the club, complementing other offerings of the Official Wolves Podcast and Matchday Live Extra.
