5th January 1946: Billy Wright makes first team debut
Club legend Billy Wright made his first-team competitive debut on the 5th of January 1946 in the FA Cup in a 4-2 win against Lovells Athletic. The FA Cup tie would finish 12-3 on aggregate with Wolves advancing to the fourth round of the competition. This was the second year the FA Cup was played following its suspension due to World War Two in the 1938/1939 season. However, this official debut came after Wright made his unofficial debut in 1939 against West Brom in a 5-3 victory, a game in which Wright scored two, becoming the club’s youngest goal scorer.
Wright would go on to play a total of 541 games for Wolves, and captained the club during its most successful period, winning three First Division titles and one FA Cup. Wright was also the first ever player to receive 100 caps for his country.
13th January 1877: Wolves play first game under the name of St. Luke’s
Wolves played their first game under the name of St. Luke’s on the 13th of January 1877 (two months after the club was organised in November 1876). This game is also the reason behind the belief the club was founded in 1877. The game was played between St. Luke's and a group of reserves from Stafford Road Engine Works, the game ended as an 8-0 defeat for St. Luke’s.
24th January 1989: Steve Bull scores 100th Wolves goal
Wolves’ legend Steve Bull scored his 100th goal in a 3-0 win over Bristol City in the Sherpa Van Trophy on the 24th of January 1989. Bull opened the scoring to secure the 100-goal feat and went on to complete his hat-trick to take his tally to 102 in the same game after just over two years at the club.
19th January 2019: Wolves beat Leicester in Molineux thriller
Wolves beat Leicester 4-3 in a Molineux thriller on the 19th of January 2019 with goals coming from Ryan Bennett and a Diogo Jota hat-trick. Jota became the first Wolves player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League era when he scored his third in the last-minute of the game. This was certainly one of the games of the season and was a pivotal win for Wolves in a season that saw them qualify for the Europa League.
