After the Final Whistle | Matija Sarkic

Wolves' Montenegrin goalkeeper Matija Sarkic shares what he gets up to once the game is finished in the latest edition of After the Final Whistle.

Back in the changing room

“I congratulate all the players, even if it’s been a negative result. Then I’ll just think about recovery as quickly as possible, with protein shakes, drinks or food we eat, so we’re ready to go again. There are different ways to recover, with ice baths and machines, and we’ll head home and try to get some sleep and go again the next day, either training or recover if it’s a day off.”

Reacting to a win or loss

“Everyone’s obviously disappointed when you leave, you try and think what went wrong, look back at what you could have done better, but the most important thing is not getting too low with defeats and not getting too high with wins. Keeping level-headed is important.”

Starting recovery

“We tend to do it as quick as possible. We have a certain window to try to get the right things in our bodies, so as soon as we come in, we’ll have a shake or some food to recover quickly.”

Post-match food

“I’ll always have a protein shake and eat whatever is there in the dressing room for us, I’m not fussy.”

Speaking to the press

“I don’t mind it. I’m Ok doing those things, I’m pretty confident, so it’s not a problem.”

Getting over a defeat

“After a defeat I’ll always look back on the game and my clips, and see what I’ve done, but if I make mistakes I’ve got to be over them. I look individually, and how I can affect the team, but first and foremost I look at my individual performance.”

Watching the game back

“I try to watch them as quick as possible, so I can get my head around what’s happened. Sometimes you don’t spot things that happen in a game, so I’ll watch it back quickly.”

Social media reaction

“I have a quick glance at the updates, but not too much. I look at what people have said about the game and the other results, but mostly I just try to speak to my family and friends.”

Relaxing and recovering

“It depends the time of the game. If it’s a Saturday normal kick-off, I’ll go home and try and recover. If it’s an evening game I struggle to sleep because of the adrenaline, so try to calm down, relax and try to get to sleep as early as possible.”

Talking it through

“My dad will call be straight away. He follows my games, so will always have his views and points, so we’ll go back and forth on what went well and what didn’t, so he’s the first person I speak to.”
