Old Golden Goals | Neto vs Olympiacos

Dissecting some of most important Wolves goals under the ownership of Fosun which, although they’re not known as Goal of the Season contenders, were hugely significant in the club’s recent history.

Olympiacos 1-1 Wolves | 12th March 2020

Pedro Neto has scored a number of important goals for the Old Gold, but his deflected free-kick out in Athens in 2020 was right up there.

In the last 16 of the Europa League, Wolves trailed to Greek giants Olympiacos, who were down to ten men, but with 67 minutes on the clock Moutinho laid a free-kick off to Neto, whose low drive took a nick and found the back of the net.

It gave Wolves the advantage after one game, and they sealed the deal back at Molineux with a 1-0 success.

“This one was improvised. We are focused on the game, trying to get the best strategy to do the goal. It was a good shot, and we got the goal. This goal was important because it was away from home.” Pedro Neto

“It was very tough, the beginning was strange, both sides were missing someone to push. It was not a very good game. Once they were down to ten, we controlled the game, we had possession of the ball, but we didn’t unbalance them enough to create chances. It stays with me for me to work on and analyse and try to project for the next one to see what we have to improve.” Nuno Espirito Santo

The lasting impression

Wolves won the second leg back at Molineux, before bowing out in the quarter final against Sevilla. Olympiacos went on to win the Greek Super League, and did so again in 2021 and 2022, as well as claiming last season's Europa Conference League title, while Wolves are yet to qualify for European football since.
