Old Golden Goals | Neves vs Aston Villa

Dissecting some of most important Wolves goals under the ownership of Fosun which, although they’re not known as Goal of the Season contenders, were hugely significant in the club’s recent history.

Aston Villa 2-3 Wolves | 16th October 2021

Five minutes into added time at Villa Park, Wolves and Aston Villa were tied at 2-2 in 2021. Wolves had staged an unlikely comeback from two down thanks to close-range finishes from Romain Saiss and Conor Coady.

Ruben Neves stood over the free-kick, the away end held its breath, and while it wasn’t the cleanest free-kick, the Portuguese benefitted from a huge deflection which saw the ball nestle into the bottom corner.

A dramatic win on derby day.

“What a win. I’m so proud of the boys, a really hard game for us. Villa have a great team, they were playing at home, a derby, so it was almost perfect for us. It was a little bit slow, I have to be honest, but what mattered is the ball hit the net.” Ruben Neves

“I think the most important thing for me after the game is to realise it’s the days we want to live as a manager. That kind of thing can happen here, the Premier League, 2-0 down, 20 minutes, there’s time to play, for the players to believe.” Bruno Lage

The lasting impression

Villa manager Dean Smith was relieved of his duties a matter of weeks after the drama at Villa Park. Wolves went on to finish 10th that campaign, while Villa came in at 14th, with six points separating the two clubs come May 2022.
