Preview | Liverpool vs Wolves

Wolves head to Anfield on Sunday afternoon following two successive victories and face a Liverpool side looking to bounce back after a pair of games without a win, and wolves.co.uk previews the latest contest between the sides.

Wolves will be without forwards Hee Chan Hwang and Jorgen Strand Larsen for the visit to Merseyside on Sunday afternoon after Vitor Pereira confirmed their absences in his pre-match press conference. The Korean suffered a hamstring injury just before half-time in last weekend’s FA Cup victory over Blackburn Rovers and the head coach believes Hwang will miss at least the next two weeks as he recovers. While Pereira also said Strand Larsen is due to start training today, but indicated Sunday’s match will come too soon for the Norwegian, but he is hopeful of having the striker back in his squad for the Premier League visit to AFC Bournemouth next weekend.

Arne Slot will be sweating on the fitness of Cody Gakpo ahead of their meeting with the Old Gold at Anfield on Sunday after the Dutchman was taken off against Everton in midweek with a knock. Gakpo would join the likes of Joe Gomez – who is facing a lengthy spell away from the squad after suffering a thigh injury against Plymouth Argyle last weekend – and Tyler Morton on the sidelines if he isn’t able to feature. Liverpool will also be without Curtis Jones after he was sent off during the fracas which occurred following the Merseyside derby draw at Goodison on Wednesday evening. Slot himself could miss the game after receiving a red card after the final whistle, but a decision on whether the manger will be suspended has yet to be confirmed by the Premier League.

3 | Journey to Sunday

Wolves head into Sunday’s game high in confidence after securing their place in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round with that win over Blackburn Rovers coming after a well-deserved three points against local rivals Aston Villa at Molineux. The Villa victory ended a run of four consecutive defeats in the Premier League, but a marvellous team showing – and goals from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Matheus Cunha – against the side from Birmingham secured the first of two 2-0 wins over the last two weekends. The second came seven days ago as a slightly altered but still strong Wolves line-up faced Blackburn in the cup, where a quickfire brace just after the half hour mark from Joao Gomes and Cunha saw the Old Gold comfortably through to the next round, setting up a tricky away tie against fellow Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth.

Slot’s side have suffered their first blip of the season in recent games after he has started to rotate his team to cope with the demands of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup football. After being by and far the most competitive side in European football during the first half the campaign, the Reds have tasted just two wins from their last five matches and host Wolves on Sunday off the back of two games without victory. A fully strength Liverpool overcame Bournemouth and Tottenham in the top flight, while the changes were made as the side fell to defeat at PSV in 29th January and Plymouth Argyle last weekend, before the derby 2-2 draw away at Everton in midweek.

4 | Snatching three golden points at Anfield

Wolves don’t possess the greatest record when it comes to taking down Liverpool in the league, with their only top flight win at the stadium in the past 41 years coming back in 2010 when Stephen Ward’s 56th minute goal saw the Old Gold claim all three points to climb off the foot of the table. The Irishman’s crisp finish from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s pass 11 proved enough to give Mick McCarthy's men a famous victory while piling pressure on then-Reds’ manager Roy Hodgson. Wolves have since won at Anfield twice in the FA Cup but have lost in their last seven league visits to the red half of Merseyside, but there will be plenty of hope in turning the tide on Sunday.
