Preview | Wolves vs Everton

It’s another game under the Molineux lights for Vitor Pereira’s Wolves this Saturday as Everton are the visitors to the Black Country, and wolves.co.uk previews the latest contest against the Toffees.

1 | Roll Call

Wolves will be without top scorer Matheus Cunha for at least the next three matches as the Brazilian serves the first game of his suspension following a straight red card in the FA Cup penalty shootout loss to AFC Bournemouth last weekend. But Pereira has been handed a boost in training this week with the return of Emmanuel Agbadou, Rodrigo Gomes and Goncalo Guedes after the trio have been absent for the last few weeks. In his pre-match press conference, Pereira would not state whether Agbadou will be fit enough to start, but did reveal Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde are also set to be in the squad on Saturday evening after overcoming niggles they picked up last time out at the Vitality Stadium. Despite playing all 120 minutes last weekend, Matt Doherty and Jorgen Strand Larsen have also had injury issues recently, so it is yet to be seen if they will be ready to start against Everton.

David Moyes has a long list of players who are currently on the sidelines, but without a game last weekend the manager took his players on a warm-weather training camp to the UAE which provided some much-needed sunshine after a cold English winter. The time away has allowed some players who missed the 1-1 draw with Brentford 10 days ago to return to training, with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Nathan Patterson set to be back in the squad. However, the Molineux meeting is expected to come too soon for forwards Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja, Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil, while defender Seamus Coleman also remains in the treatment room and midfielder Orel Mangala won’t play again this season after recent surgery.

3 | Journey to Sunday

It’s been a topsy turvy few weeks for Pereira’s side, who ended February with two wins and two defeats in their Premier League outings, while also adding a win and loss to their record in the FA Cup. Victories over Aston Villa and Bournemouth, as well as narrow 2-1 losses to Liverpool and Fulham has seen the Old Gold push five points clear of the drop zone, but with a more favourable run of fixtures ahead and full focus on the league after the FA Cup defeat in Dorset last weekend, Wolves will be hoping to get more points on the board to ensure Premier League survival for another season.

Moyes’ in-form Everton may still only be one position ahead of Wolves in the Premier League table, but they have extended their advantage over the Old Gold to 10 points following an unbeaten run under the returning boss. Currently on an unbeaten Premier League run of seven matches, the Toffees will be looking at extending that record to eight when they head to the Black Country on Saturday evening. Wins over Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City and Crystal Palace, together with draws against Liverpool, Manchester United and Brentford have seen Everton push away from the drop zone and with relegation worries all but gone, Toffees supporters will be looking up the table rather than down in the remaining 11 matches.

4 | A summer win over the Toffees

In the July sunshine during the Covid-hit 2019/20 season, Wolves ran riot at Molineux as Nuno Espirito Santo’s Old Gold returned to winning ways in style with a stunning victory over Everton. A Raul Jimenez penalty just before the break gave Wolves a first half lead for the first time since February, before Leander Dendoncker’s header doubled the advantage in the opening minute of the second period. Substitute Diogo Jota sealed the Old Gold’s first win in three matches with 15 minutes remaining after latching onto Ruben Neves’ outstanding pass before hitting the back of the net.

Wolves | Patricio, Doherty, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Jonny, Neves, Dendoncker, Neto (Jota 56), Podence (Traore 69), Jimenez (Moutinho 78).

Everton | Pickford, Walcott (Bernard 56), Keane, Mina (Coleman 31), Digne, Baines (Branthwaite 46), Davies, Sigurdsson, Gordon (Iwobi 56), Richarlison (Kean 63), Calvert-Lewin.
