1. Record continues to grow
Already record breakers, but Wolves stretched their total matches with an unchanged side to eight at the weekend. Wolves are now the only Premier League club in history to make no changes to their starting eleven for the first eight games of a campaign and were rewarded with three points. The head coach resisted the temptation to hand starts to Ivan Cavaleiro and Adama Troare and was vindicated with a battling display. Will Nuno continue the run against Watford in a fortnight’s time?
2. Rui in the grey
There was a first outing for Wolves’ new grey and yellow goalkeeper kit, which served Rui Patricio well at Selhurst Park. Unable to use his usual blue kit due to Palace’s home colours, Patricio was in grey and quickly personalised his shirt by cutting the sleeves off. On the pitch, the goalkeeper was brilliant, putting in a fine performance on his way to keeping another clean sheet. His stunning double save to deny Max Meyer and Jeffrey Schlupp after the break was the stand-out moment.
3. Doherty brings in the FPL points
On Friday we suggested Matt Doherty may be a wise pick for your FPL team and the defender duly delivered with a 15-point performance. His goal gathered six points as a defender and added to the clean sheet and bonus points, making it an enjoyable afternoon for his FPL managers. It wasn’t just Doherty bringing in points however, as Patricio and Ryan Bennett both earned clean sheets and bonus points for their efforts at Selhurst Park. Below you can see the areas Doherty covered during the 90 minutes on Saturday.
4. Second-half story
Saturday was a familiar story for Wolves, who waited until after the break to do their business in front of goal. Since Ruben Neves’ stunning free-kick against Everton on the opening day, Nuno’s side have scored all eight of their goals after the interval. With another tight opening half in the bank, Doherty struck in the 56th minute to seal the latest victory at Selhurst Park.
5. Bennett praises defensive determination
Saturday’s clean sheet continued Wolves’ impressive defensive record this season – only the top three have conceded fewer goals in the Premier League. After another 90 minute shut-out, Nuno’s side have now conceded just one goal in 561 minutes across all competitions and have chalked up six clean sheets already during 2018/19. Bennett impressed again on Saturday and was pleased with the defensive efforts.
