Dendoncker | ‘This is a great place to be at’

Feeling at home in Wolverhampton, it was no surprise Leander Dendoncker was delighted to extend his contract with Wolves until at least 2023.

The Belgian has become a key cog in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side since arriving at Molineux two-and-a-half years ago from Anderlecht, and despite playing every match in the club’s first European campaign in 40 years last season, as Wolves reached the Europa League quarter-finals, Dendoncker believes there is still more to come from the team.

On signing his new contract

“I’m really happy to be able to stay longer here and to extend my contract. It’s my third season now and until now, it has been a great journey; both for me, the club, the fans, the players, everyone.

“This is a great place to be at and to work. I’m happy off the pitch and on the pitch, so I’m really happy to be able to stay here longer.”

On the journey he’s been on at Wolves

“For the club, it’s been a great journey in the Premier League, as well as in the Europa League because to get to the quarter-finals is a really nice memory for the club, and it has been great until now.

“I hope we can end this season well, but we will need to keep on working hard for that, and I hope we can get there.”

On taking time to adapt to England

“It was a change. I’d come from a different country, a different competition, a different culture as well, so you always need to adapt first to that.

“The first months had not been easy for me, but then after a couple of months, I think everything settled down and it went great for me.

“I just tried to keep on working really hard at training, just to be ready for whenever that chance was going to come, because I knew it was going to come.

“When it came, I just tried to be ready and tried to give my best, but that’s what I try to do in every game, to give the best of myself for the team, and that’s what I will always try to do.”

On feeling at home in Wolverhampton

“It’s my third season now and I think the people are really open here, really warm and the fans, the people in general, and the club is one that is very warm, so it’s beginning to feel like home now.

“It’s great to work with all of the players, with the technical staff as well. I think we’ve delivered great work until now and I hope we can just keep going on, winning games, taking points and just enjoy working hard and enjoying being together.”

On aims for the future in gold and black

“I just hope we can keep growing as a team. It’s true that we’ve had two very nice years, and now we are in the third season, I hope we can do the same or maybe even better.

“However, that is not easy in the Premier League because it’s a very tough league, so I think that will require the very best of each one of us, but we really have to try to make that work.”
