Calling all 16 and 17-year-olds

Fancy a summer challenge with a difference? A chance to meet new people, try new things and also enjoy plenty of personal development and advice and guidance for the future? Whilst, naturally, having a load of fun at the same time?

Well perhaps the NCS (National Citizen Scheme) programme could be just what you are looking for.

Wolves Foundation have now launched their summer NCS scheme, with young people able to sign up for one of two different ‘waves’, each of which provides two weeks of engaging activity.

Scott Langford, education officer (NCS), explains more. “We are now recruiting for our two summer waves, starting on either July 25th or August 15th, and open to current Year 11 and 12 students,” he says.

“For the first week of the fortnight programme, there is a residential which this year takes place at the Hen Cloud facility in Leek.

“Over the first three days of the residential the young people can take part in different activities such as abseiling, rock climbing and archery.

“And in the second phase of the week is all about participants having the chance to develop themselves with advice and guidance around areas like looking after their money, how to produce the best presentation, food preparation – different general skills that maybe they haven’t focused on massively at school but will need in their future.

“Then the second week is back here at Molineux and is based around a social action project.

“This is where participants can take on something within the local community which they feel passionately about.

“Last year we had a group where one of the young people had a link to the British Heart Foundation, so they decided to do a collection.

“On the first day they planned it all out, on the second they created flyers and posters, and over the rest of the week they split up with one group handing out the flyers within the city and the other collecting items from the public at Wolfie’s Den.

“At the end of the week they passed on all the donations of items to the British Heart Foundation, who let us know that they would have raised £400 for the charity, which was fantastic.

“The beauty of the social action project is that it is designed and carried out by the participants themselves – we are there for advice and guidance but it is about what the young people feel strongly about and how they can put their plans into action.”

The fee of £50 covers the entire fortnight including all food, travel and accommodation, as well as a celebration evening a few weeks after the course finishes.

Anyone who signs up before February 28th will go into a draw for a pair of tickets for the home game with Crystal Palace on March 5th whilst they will also be able to attend ‘Keep Warm’ events before the courses where participants can enjoy an introduction to what to expect from NCS and activities such as bowling.

“All the feedback we receive from young people who have been on previous NCS courses on what a great experience it has been,” adds Scott.

“It’s about getting to meet new people, try new things, develop themselves all at the same time as having a positive impact on the local community.

“We would encourage anyone from that age group to have a look and consider taking part in NCS this summer.”
