The 19-year-old spent the back end of 2021 with Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Championship, but the right-back will now make a return to League Two for the remainder of the campaign.
Matheson started the season as a regular in Stuart Taylor’s starting 11 and made an appearance in 11 of The Accies’ opening 16 matches, but he has not featured in the squad since the Challenge Cup quarter-finals at the end of November.
A decision has been made to switch Matheson’s loan to Scunthorpe, and Matt Jackson, Wolves’ strategic player marketing manager, believes the move will offer the full-back the best opportunity to further his development under the tutelage of a familiar face.
“It’s a good opportunity for Luke to be reunited with Keith Hill, his former Rochdale manager,” Jackson explained. “Like all our players, we want them to be in environments that are good for them and to work with coaches who have helped them previously, which is going to be the case here.
“Keith has already played a big part in Luke’s development and it’s great that he will continue to do so at Scunthorpe.
“This is going to be a huge benefit to Luke because he’s still so young in terms of football years, but he will go there with the confidence of playing under a coach who understands him really well, who gave him his debut and his early exposure, so we believe it can only be a positive move.”
