Alan Browne headed the hosts into an early second half lead before Helder Costa levelled for Nuno Espirito Santo's men just ten minutes later.
Wolves pressed for a second goal in an attempt to take all three points but couldn't break the resolute Lilywhites' back line down.
Speakig after the game, Doherty said: "We've done it quite a few times this season when we've gone a goal behind, we always seem to get back into the game. That shows good character from us.
"If you ask any team they'd be disappointed to concede from a set piece and we're no different.
"I think we were a bit dodgy with set pieces earlier on in the season and we completely got that out of our system where we started to defend them really well.
"I'm sure everyone believed that we would get back into it. Obviously the sending off helped but I still think we would have done something along those lines anyway.
"Preston have been on a decent run so it's not a bad result.
"Considering they went down to ten men quite early in the second half, then getting back into the game straight away, you'd expect us to go on and win it.
"We threw everything we had at them and they just defended well.
"We're a team that likes to play with space in behind, making runs, so playing against ten men makes it that little bit more difficult.
"When they drop off it neglects all of our good play so we tried to do things in and around the box, different options, but they just defended well and we couldn't get through them."
There were over 5,600 travelling fans at Deepdale on Saturday and there will be over 4,000 at Craven Cottage when Wolves take on Fulham next weekend.
And the defender believes that the support, both at home and on the road, plays a big part in helping the team on the pitch.
"We all knew that there was going to be five-and-a-half thousand Wolves fans at the game, there's going to be four-and-a-half next week and we're selling out pretty much every home game.
"We love playing in front of full houses and great away support drives us on. We're very appreciative of that.
"We can definitely hear it, whenever we do something good or it's looking like we might score, you can hear it and it's nice to play in.
"Every time we've not won a game, we seem to have gone on a decent run and we'll be looking to do that again.
"We want to try and win as many games as possible so, when we don't, it's a little bit disappointing.
"Fulham are right up there, they've been a good team for years and it will be on TV so it's a big game."
