The skipper and his team mates had battled hard, yet appeared to be heading for a draw against Newcastle, despite the hosts being reduced to ten men, but they were rewarded for patience.
Diogo Jota was the architect and Matt Doherty applied the finishing touch to spark joyous scenes of celebration and Coady felt it was reward for the efforts put in across the previous 90 minutes.
On the late drama
“It’s an incredible feeling, I’m still a bit shell-shocked by it to be honest. It looked like it was going for a draw to all the players, not just supporters, but the way we broke and the way ‘Doc’ gets up the pitch is phenomenal - he deserves a goal.
“It goes to show this football club and this team keep going, no matter what. It wasn’t the prettiest at times, but we wanted to keep going right until the end and we’ll never stop doing that – to get three points here is very special for everybody.”
On the patience second-half
“Newcastle are a really good time, we know how tough it is coming here. We know the sort of atmosphere they create and we wanted to quieten that. We did it at times. Just before half time we got a bit open, a bit split, which we didn’t want to do, but second-half we stayed together and we dug in right until the end.
“To come to this place and get a win is really tough. The boys have dug in today, especially in the second-half where we had more of the ball, and we’ve managed to get a win. I thought the character the boys showed until the end was fantastic.”
On playing ten men
“It might sound stupid, but it becomes harder when teams are down to ten men. They become more focused, they make sure they stay in their shape more and it becomes harder for the opposition.
“It was important we kept moving the ball from side to side, and when we got a chance to break we did it quickly. Luckily, we’ve got some frightening pace in our team.”
On looking forward
“The manager and players speak about it all the time, we’re taking it a game at a time. There’s no two ways about it, we focus on the next game and that’s Bournemouth next week. We’ve come here, done a job, got three points which we’re made up with and move forward again.”
