The right wing-back scored Wolves’ only goal in the 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City on Friday night – a match which marked his 200th league appearance for the club.
But the Irishman, who is calling for unity among his teammates and Wolves fans, knows the players will have to ‘dig deep’ to get out of their current disappointing run of form.
“We’re obviously worried,” Doherty said. “Coming into the season we had high hopes and we’re a good team. We should be winning here [at Cardiff] and beating Huddersfield at home, but we’re not doing that and it’s not good enough.
“Ever since the manager came in we’re not really used to losing games. Even at the start of the Premier League we haven’t been used to losing games and the run we’re on now is uncharted territory for a lot of us who have been here the last year-and-a-half.
“It’s going to test our character, test our heads and see if we have to dig deep down to get ourselves out of it.”
Doherty believed the team felt ‘comfortable’ during the first half of the Cardiff clash, but following a second half comeback from the Welsh side, the 26-year-old is instead calling on his teammates to stick together to stop the run of defeats when Chelsea visit Molineux on Wednesday night.
He added: “Going into the second half we were told to keep doing the same thing, either get a second goal or just see out the game, but that’s just the nature of the Premier League, ruthless in the boxes from crosses.
“Considering the record that we have when we do take the lead, it was disappointing. Once we go ahead we don’t lose too many games.
“But we really need to look at ourselves and pick it up because we’re in a slump and it’s hard to get off, especially in the Premier League.
“Once you start losing games it’s a slippery slope, but we said in the changing room that we’ve got to stick together now, and we’ve got Chelsea on Wednesday and we’ve got to try and win the game.
“You could say that it’s good the next game is coming up so soon after, sometimes you have a week, a week-and-a-half to think about it, but we’re going to get straight into it.
“I know it’s Chelsea, but we’ve got the home crowd, so we’ll see what happens.”
