The skipper finished the season with Wolves back at his boyhood club in Liverpool but could not prevent his side falling to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. However, the result would not take any shine off what was an incredible season which could potentially end in Europa League qualification.
On finishing the season in seventh
“It’s been a wonderful season; an amazing season. We said at the start of the year that we didn’t really have targets on what we wanted to do, we just wanted to improve as a team and compete, and I think we’ve done that.
“We’ve put a good account of ourselves and I think the supporters have enjoyed themselves, which is the main thing, but I think it’s been an outstanding season.
“I’m very proud to be captain of this football club, every single day. It’s a huge football club, with a fantastic fan base and those players have given their all this season, which I’m so proud of.
“We’ll look back on it with fond memories, but we’ll move on now, we’ve got another season next year, we’ll take our break and enjoy it.”
On potentially qualifying for Europa League
“It would be brilliant for the club. At the start of the season we didn’t set any targets, but we find ourselves where we are because we’ve worked hard, listened to the manager and put across his ideas onto the football pitch. We’ve done that all season.
“Obviously, we can’t control what goes on in the FA Cup final, but we will sit and watch it, enjoy it, and see where we end up. We’ve done all we can now.”
On Anfield finale
“I thought in the second half we were outstanding; we controlled the play and we gave Liverpool a very good game.
“It was disappointing in the way we conceded the goals, as they came from our mistakes, but it’s the quality they’ve got; you lose the ball and it’s in the back of your net.
“We’ve got to learn, and in the last game of the season we’ve come here and given a good account of ourselves, which is what we wanted to do.
“I wanted to win the game; I wanted to win with this football club and we felt we could win the game. I would have liked Liverpool to have already won it [the Premier League title] a lot earlier, but we wanted to come here and win the game. But we haven’t, so we need to improve.”
