'We have to raise our standards', admits Nuno

Nuno Espirito Santo has called for his Wolves players to raise their standards following defeat to Braga in the opening Europa League group-stage game.

Wolves’ 1-0 loss at Molineux on Thursday night was the first time Nuno’s side haven’t tasted victory in the current European campaign, but the head coach wants his team to improve as they look for their first victory of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

On falling to Braga

“It was not a bad performance and we had our chances. They didn’t create much, but the chance that they did have it becomes harder.

“I think we did enough, we controlled and managed the game, we create and didn’t allow too many chances, we were well organised defensively, but they scored.

“Every goal is a mistake; if there was perfection there would be no goals, but we have to work on it, analyse, keep calm and see what we have to do now.

“We’re really disappointed because the boys worked hard, but this is football.

“It was a tough game, and we need to be better in some moments; the effort was there but we have to keep going.”

On taking positives from defeat

“Of course, there are positives to take from tonight. I think we controlled the game, managed the game well and we had chances to score. There are things that we have to improve, and we have to keep patient and try to break teams because sometimes it’s difficult.

“We have to raise our standards, as a team we have to raise our standards again, but we will keep on going.”

On improving ahead of Crystal Palace

“The reality is that we’re not performing well, we have to analyse and find solutions in the team to improve.

“We’ve played against good teams, and sometimes you don’t do everything you can in the games. We started the games well, and this must be what we have to do. We must come strong on Sunday and we must react.

“We have to make decisions and try for solutions for the best of the team because we must go out of this situation, improve our performance and bounce back immediately.”
