Growth during group stage pleases Nuno

Nuno Espirito Santo was pleased with the progress his team have made throughout the Europa League group stages, following its conclusion on Thursday night.

Wolves signed off from Group K in style with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Besiktas at Molineux – a game which came to life following Diogo Jota’s introduction from the bench. Pleased with the performance and impact of Jota, Nuno can now look forward to Monday’s draw, but not before the next Premier League test this weekend.

On signing off in style

“It was a tough competition. The first game at home didn’t do quite well, we didn’t play good, but after that, progressively through the competition we got better.

“In the end we performed well, we didn’t fight for one place, we fought game by game, to see at the end where it’d take us.

“It took us to the knockout stage, we are delighted to be there, but now we put it aside, wait for the draw, and then we think about it.”

On his substitutions

“The credit is for the players, always for the players. We make decisions, sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn’t. Today they performed well, the team played good.

“You try to change the game and find the best solution for the team. This is what we want, players to create an impact and Jota did fantastically well.”

On an improved second-half

“I think the first-half was tough. It was balanced. Both teams were trying to play, we played good, but in the second-half I think we controlled better.

“We had chances and made our opponents Besiktas concede more space and we were able to perform well.

“I’m happy with all the performance, I think we performed well, we played good. We scored goals, defended well, were organised, very good.”

On giving youngsters a chance

“It’s a big benefit for their careers, it’s something important – this is a real competition. You can train for 1,000 hours, but it’s not the real thing.

“I’m happy for them, this is what we’re trying to create, build players and put them in the first-team to show their talents, express themselves and help us because we are a very small squad.”

On Monday’s draw

“We’re going to be there and we’ll wait and see, but it’s game-by-game, next game is Premier League, then we think about it.

“Now we have to focus on the next game this Sunday, a tough game, then we’re going to see the draw.”
