Neves | 'We want to give as many points as we can to our fans'

Ruben Neves dedicated Wolves’ first home win of the 2021/22 Premier League season to the Molineux faithful after their ‘amazing’ support throughout the early stages of the campaign.

The stadium has been rocking this season following the return of supporters after 18 months of playing games behind closed doors, and the midfielder has praised the impact the Wolves fans have on the team both at home and at away grounds across the country, as the team repaid the supporters with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, as Hee Chan Hwang and Raul Jimenez combined twice to secure the three points.

On a first win at home

“It felt very good for us. The aim before the game was to win the first game at home for our fans that have been amazing with us, supporting us everywhere. This one was for them.

“Since the beginning of the season, we’ve been working really hard for this, and fortunately, we did it today. Of course, we needed to suffer a little bit at the end and defend a little bit at the end, but that’s normal. Newcastle wanted to have a good result here as well, but we were solid, we were compact, and I think we deserved the win.

“We’ve been working really hard since the beginning of the season. I think we’ve been doing a great job. In the first three games, we deserved more than zero points, but that’s football.

“We’ve got six points in a row now, so that’s really good for us. Now we’ve just got to keep on going, keep on working hard during the week and keep doing what we’ve been doing to give the fans a lot of wins.”

On Hwang and Jimenez partnership

“We were struggling a little bit to score and since he [Hwang] started playing he’s scored three goals already.

“It’s very good for us, it’s very good for the team, but we’ve been working really hard on this since the beginning of the season – to get that combination up front and to get those plays that give us the chance to score. Today we created a few of them and fortunately he scored twice

“But that’s all about the work we do. It doesn’t matter the player who is playing, we know what we have to do.

“They are amazing players with a lot of qualities, so Chan is scoring, but I think everyone is going to score because we are working really well on that.”

On Newcastle’s equaliser

“We spoke to the ref and he said he didn’t stop the game because Sa got up, but that’s normal. I think he had a few seconds to stop the game, and if you don’t stop the game, Sa will of course get up to help the team. But it was too late.

“It’s really hard and maybe the ref could’ve stopped the game before Sa got up, but football is really fast and fortunately we came to the second-half with the same spirit and we got the second goal.”

On backing of the Molineux crowd

“It means a lot for us. We always try to give as many points as we can to our fans because their support is amazing.

“Not only at home, but at every single game. When we go away, it is brilliant, so this win was for them as well.

“We just want them to keep on supporting the team because we’ll give everything to give them as many points as we can.”
