Davis | 'I'm really pleased with everything we did'

Intern head coach Steve Davis was delighted to guide his boyhood club to three important Premier League points against Nottingham Forest.

Davis, taking the reins at Molineux for the first time, watched on from the side as an eventful second-half eventually concluded with Wolves claiming the points. Ruben Neves converted from the spot and Jose Sa saved from the same distance, which proved the difference, as Davis celebrated managing his first Wolves match at Molineux in the ideal manner.

On the winning feeling

“It’s great – any win you get is, particularly at home. We needed that, we were desperate for that result to try and kickstart what we’re doing this season. It’s a reward for the work they put in this week. The players have worked extremely hard to get that result and I thought we were excellent second-half. We tired towards the end, they put us under a little bit of pressure, but I’m generally really pleased.

“Delighted with the performance, delighted with the reaction with what we did today. We had a plan and the way we executed it was spot on. We broke the line, we got in the box, we made more opportunities, we tired towards the end, but they put a lot of effort in at the end, so I was delighted.”

On controlling much of the game

“I thought for 70 minutes we had good control. We just lacked that bit at the end, we’re still working on that, I thought there were more runs in the box than there had been, which is a positive. We just need to find a bit of quality still. We had good moments, we just have to make better decisions, but generally really pleased with everything we did today.

“You could sense what was happening in the stadium, that nervousness amongst the fans and the players. It was important we didn’t try and stretch to that, but it’s a situation we haven’t had too often. I was surprised it was as long as eight, and we even played a bit more for the substitutions, but we held out and got through the game.”

On the two penalty incidents

“We agree with both really. No qualms. Obviously disappointed we gave them an opportunity to get the equaliser late on, but a fantastic save from Sa. We know he’s a good shot stopper, so because of that he always gives you a chance in those situations.

“It was a great save, he went early and guessed right, so a fantastic save. That was the difference. It comes down to having the bottle to take it. Ruben struck it really well into the bottom corner and Jose made a fantastic save. We needed that today.”

On the personal satisfaction

“It’s every boy’s dream who supports this football club. I’m personally absolutely delighted, so I’m going to have a beer. We’ll be in on Sunday, aware that Palace is the next game, so we’ll recover and try to get a plan ready for Tuesday.”

On improving on recent weeks

“We’ve had games where we’ve had more possession, pressure, we just haven’t been able to break teams down and produce the bit of quality which matters in this division. It’s something we’re working on, to get better at.

“I think we lacked that bit of quality. Even sometimes when you’re in possession and you have players running towards the box, we lacked that early pass, that early cross, whereas we’re having a touch and trying to be precise, rather than get it in the box, but it’s very satisfying.”
