Davis | 'We just have to stick together'

Steve Davis insists he shares the disappointment of Wolves supporters following Sunday’s loss at home to Leicester City but urges everyone to stick together if the team are to turn their fortunes around.

Despite seeing his side pose 21 shots at the Leicester goal, the head coach has bemoaned his side’s lack of clinical finishing compared to the Foxes, while also pointing out the lapse defending of the team, but believes the players will be doing everything they can to stick together and look at the positives ahead of a trip to Brentford on Saturday.

On losing at Molineux

“It was disappointing because it was a painful day in the end with the scoreline. I’m very disappointed and share the pain that is being felt by the supporters. But in the end, we’ve got to do better. It’s not good enough.

“We came into the game with a lot of hope from previous performances, and although we had a lot of the ball, but having a lot of the ball didn’t get us a result in the end, it’s about how we defend and the other bits which were important. The defending, the blocking, the running – we just weren’t at.”

On conceding while on top

“It was a big swing, because we had about seven chances in the first 15 minutes. But they get a free-kick from a risky bit of play from us and they capitalised on it from a fantastic strike. We couldn’t do too much about the first goal, it was a fantastic strike, but you need a reaction, and we didn’t get that. It then becomes very difficult because how they set-up to break them down.

“The second goal was poor defending. The third and fourth were the same. As a group, we were disappointed with how we conceded those goals, but you could see the difference in how they struck the ball to us.

“We were anxious and we were not quite positive around the box. We delayed the shots or we didn’t put enough power into the shots and were very tentative with what we did in front of goal today. But we haven’t defended well enough in our box and in the opposite box, we haven’t been clinical enough. It just wasn’t good enough for us.”

On creating chances

“If you want to drag some positives from it, I guess those are the positives, we created a lot of chances – we had 21 shots today, probably more than we’ve had all season, but you need a little bit of luck in those situations.

“But if you look at the emphatic way they finished, the clinical way they finished, and the way we finished, it was a lot different. Ultimately, the result is the most important thing and it’s the way you lose and the manner in which you lose it what hurts the most.”

On a need to be clinical

“We looked at the structure and it was a little bit too open first-half. They broke on us a few times and we talked about that. The plan was to attack with five, but we didn’t particularly get the structure right.

“It’s just trying to find a balance between having enough players to create problems and having enough players to ensure you’re alright at the back. But first-half I felt we did create chances and cause problems with the amount of bodies we got in the box, but weren’t clinical. Then we got punished every time on the break.”

On sticking together

“I’ve been on that terrace and I’ve been one of those who are disappointed, but we just have to stick together. The most important thing we can do now is stay positive.

“We need to change the outlook and change the results very quickly, and we can only do that on the training ground this week. We have to find a way, we have to find a different way of playing, we have to find a way of being more attack minded and pressing when we can.

“We created chances but then at the other end we’re conceding. So we just need to get the balance right. Going into Brentford we need to look at that this week.”
