Bueno | ‘I was dreaming about this for such a long time’

Hugo Bueno says when he first stepped foot inside Molineux at the age of 16, his father told him he’ll play for the first-team one day, and having broken into the side in recent weeks, has committed his future to the club.

The Spaniard has risen rapidly from the under-18s to first-team level, and under Steve Davis last month, was handed his debut off the bench against Nottingham Forest – an afternoon he’s kicked on from. Three further starts, a first senior assist and the Castore Player of the Month award have followed, but Bueno is focussed about continuing his work and building on his recent good form.

On his new contract

“Obviously, I’m really, really happy to have signed another deal, but I have loads of things that I want to do. At the moment, I’m just trying to focus on the day-to-day and just do the work and I’m just thinking about the next match, because if I think about all the plans I have in my head, maybe I will get a little bit confused. I’m just thinking about working every day and winning the next game.”

On a big past month

“To be honest, these few months were a little bit crazy for me, but also, I’ve been working very hard for this moment, so I’m really happy things are going well. But I’m also thinking about the team wining some games. At the moment, everything for me has been brilliant, and hopefully it’ll stay like this or even better.”

On his debut against Forest

“In that moment, I couldn’t think a lot because it was extra time. I remember ‘Hodgy’ was going to come in, that was the last sub, so I had to do everything so quick. I remember Joao telling me, ‘Are you ready?’ and I was like, ‘Yes’. My shinpads were ready, I just took my bib and my shirt, and I didn’t have time for them to explain anything.

“I was on the pitch and the first thing I thought was that it was extra time, and I was going to give my everything to keep the result and win the game. Everything went perfect and I was very happy, it was a very special moment for me.”

On a first start at Palace

“It was after pre-match, so it was quite late [when he found out]. I was in my room, and I got a text. Steve told me to come down for a second to talk. When I went down, he asked me if I was ready. He said, ‘I know you’re ready and that’s why I’m going to give you your chance today’. In that moment I was fully focused on the game the whole time.

“I was ready and from the first moment, all my teammates gave me loads of confidence, so it was brilliant. It was a bit disappointing because of the result, but I found myself very comfortable from the beginning, because my teammates and the staff gave me confidence from the beginning, so it was brilliant.

“It was excitement, I wanted it to start, you always have a little bit of nerves, but that’s good to keep you concentrating the whole time. I was a little bit nervous, but also very excited to start the game.”

On his assist for Adama

“I told Adama a little bit before the game that I usually put my crosses in between the second post and the penalty spot. I know he likes to stay wide a little bit, so I told him if I have the chance to put a ball, be ready, because it’ll probably go there.

“That all in the area, I just thought to put it there, and I was also very happy for him because he deserved a goal. It was a brilliant moment, like a dream moment, and it was really good.”

On the pressure of playing first-team

“Not at all, to be honest, I just try to enjoy myself. Obviously, you have that pressure, but with all my teammates, I know they are always there to help me, so I don’t really feel that pressure, I just play football, enjoy it, give my everything, and try to help the team in anything I can do.

“At the moment, I’m enjoying it a lot, just to play games. I was dreaming about this for such a long time, but I’m just thinking about the team and try to win games, and hopefully, in these few games, getting better.”

On always dreaming of reaching the first-team

“I was dreaming to play in a full stadium with our fans – everything. When I first came here. I was 16, and from the beginning, I remember when I came here, I went to the tour of the stadium and I sat on the bench. I was sat next to my dad and he was like, ‘You will be here one day’, and I was like, ‘I’ll have to work a lot for this’.

“But obviously, now I’m here and I remember all these things, it’s a little bit crazy. I was always with that in my head, and now that I have it, I’m just trying to enjoy it a lot and give my best.”

On working with Davis again

“He was the one that made me a wing-back, so it’s very special. I think he knows me very well as well, so I’m really, really happy because he gave me this opportunity. He knew I was ready, him and James, because I worked with James last season as well.

“I’m fully thankful that they gave me this chance and I can prove myself against the best players. The only thing I can say to them is thanks, but I just want to keep going. I don’t want to just stop here, I want more and more. Hopefully this is just the beginning.”
