The old gold have shipped seven goals in their last two home outing, but the different against the Seagulls was Wolves were at threat at the other end, and scored twice, which gave Neves positives. His penalty had actually put Wolves in front on 35 minutes – his fourth goal of the season – but it’s results which matter to the captain, who was frustrated after the points slipped away.
On a mixed performance
“I think there are positives to take, but again we conceded too many goals at home. We conceded two goals when we were playing with the same number of players, because we were too soft again defending. First of all, easy passes inside of our box, second goal we let the cross go in too easily.
“I think we reacted well, we scored two goals, then in the second-half, one man less, really hard against a team like Brighton who want to have the ball all the game. I think we worked really hard, and maybe deserved a little bit more, because we created a few chances as well, playing with one man less, but we need to be better defensively.”
On another successful penalty
“It’s working. It’s training, training to improve every day, and try to do the right things. We know penalties happen in games, so we need to be ready when they come to give the team a goal. That’s what I’m working for.
“Fortunately, I scored again today, but the main thing is the result. I think we deserved a little bit more because of our work. Apart from the defending, when we were too soft, I think we did a good match playing with one man less. We worked really hard and it’s frustrating to come out of it with no points.”

On welcoming Lopetegui
“I’m 100 per cent sure he’s a great coach and he will help us a lot. He’s not here yet, so we need to focus on the two games in front of us. We play Wednesday in the Carabao Cup, and then we have Arsenal at home – two more games at home, we’ll try to get wins, try to go through in the cup, try to get points in the league, that’s our main target now.
“Of course, we know he’s a great manager, he did a lot of big things in football, he coached a lot of big teams – Porto, Real Madrid, Spain, he won the Europa League, so everyone knows him very well and I know he’ll help us. The next two games are the most important for us, the last games before the World Cup, and we need to make sure we get some results.”
A new chapter.

On their past together
“I said he was special because he gave me my debut in professional football at 17. At that time in Portugal, nobody did that, so of course he’s a special coach and a special person for me. Because of him, I started to play professional football, with my team in Porto.
“Everyone knows him very well, everyone knows the way he wants to work, so we’re looking forward to working with him. But we focus on the next two games because we need to make sure we have good results at home to go to the World Cup in different form.”
