Neves | 'It needs to be a new season for us after World Cup'

Ruben Neves believes the Premier League taking a break for the World Cup could not have come at a better time for Wolves as the team looks to turn things around under new boss Julen Lopetegui.

Wolves go into the period at the foot of the table following defeat against Arsenal at Molineux, but with the Spaniard taking charge from Monday, and with six weeks until the top flight returns in late December, Neves is calling on his teammates to do everything they can to work with Lopetegui and change their ways as they start a ‘new season’ following the World Cup.

On falling short against the league leaders

“It’s a defeat. It’s hard to keep saying the same things. We want results, we’re working hard to get results but we’re not getting them.

“We did a good game on Wednesday and most of the game today we did it well, but it’s little details again. We let them create three or four chances and they scored twice. We need to improve.

“We have a break now, we’ll have a rest, and it needs to be a new season for us after this. It’s our main target with a new coach.”

On struggles at either end

“It’s hard. We created more chances than them in the first-half but we didn’t score. They didn’t create too many chances in the first-half, I remember a shot from Gabriel, but apart from that, nothing more.

“The second-half, we started again, controlling the game and knowing they would have a lot of the ball. But they are a fantastic team, they are playing fantastic football as well. But if you give them two or three chances they will score. At the moment, we need 10 chances to score one goal, and they are the things that need to change as well.

“We need to focus for the whole 90 minutes and we cannot concede those goals because we were really well organised most of the game.

“We need to play better, and it’s a new season for us after the World Cup and there’s a lot of time to work and I hope we can do it well when we come back.”

On welcoming Lopetegui to Wolves

“He will do his best, he will bring the best of us and the best of him and what he knows. Everyone is excited because he’s a really good manager.

“He was on top teams before so everyone knows him really well and everyone is excited for him.”

On utilising the World Cup break

“Hopefully things will change for us, but for that we need to work really hard because the boys who stay here need to make sure that everyone is 100 per cent focused on the work we need to do.

“We are last in the table, but we still have a lot of time to change things and it needs to be straight away after the World Cup.

“This break will be massive for us. We’re lucky to have the break this season and it will be important for us to get things together, try to work on different things and hopefully we can do better when we come back.”
