Nunes makes World Cup debut

Matheus Nunes made his World Cup debut as Portugal booked their place in the knockout stages of the competition on Monday evening.

The Wolves midfielder replaced Joao Felix for the final eight minutes of Portugal’s 2-0 victory over Uruguay, which came courtesy of a Bruno Fernandes brace.

Ruben Neves also made it two starts from two out in Qatar, as he played 69 minutes before being substituted, while Jose Sa remained on the bench.

Portugal conclude their group stage against Hee Chan Hwang’s South Korea on Friday, knowing top spot is secured, so will face the runner up of Group G the following Tuesday.

In the other Group H game, injury again prevented Hwang from coming off the bench, and he watched his country lose a 3-2 thriller with Ghana on Monday.

Their hopes of reaching the knockout stages remain alive, however – they must beat Uruguay on Friday and hope Portugal do them a favour against Ghana at the same time.

Raul Jimenez and Mexico suffered a costly 2-0 loss to Argentina on Saturday, when the Wolves striker featured for the final 24 minutes off the bench.

Their aims of the knockout stages have suffered as a result, but if Mexico beat Saudi Arabi on Wednesday, they could still pip Argentina, or even Poland to qualification, should goal difference swing.

The final World Cup group games involving Wolves players are as follows:

Portugal | Sa, Neves & Nunes

  • South Korea vs Portugal | Friday 2nd December, 3pm

Mexico | Jimenez

  • Saudi Arabia vs Mexico | Wednesday 30th November, 7pm

South Korea | Hwang

  • South Korea vs Portugal | Friday 2nd December, 3pm
