Bentley's journey to Wolves

Goalkeeper Dan Bentley has become Julen Lopetegui’s latest new recruit at Wolves, following many years plying his trade in the EFL with Southend United, Brentford and Bristol City.

The stopper has more than 400 league appearances to his name and now steps up to the Premier League for the first time, and on the day he signs on the dotted line with Wolves, we reflect on his journey to this position.

22 October 2011 | Bentley made his debut for Southend United as an 18-year-old, replacing the injured Glenn Morris as a second half substitute in a 4-1 League Two win over Torquay United.

17th August 2013 | The 2013/14 campaign was Bentley’s first as the Shrimpers’ undisputed number one and he’s seen here keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Northampton Town at Roots Hall.

23rd May 2015 | Bentley enhanced his reputation as a penalty stopper at the best possible place, saving two spot kicks at Wembley, as Southend beat Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off final.

23rd May 2015 | The goalkeeper celebrates his only promotion to date on the Wembley pitch, as he stepped up to League One for the first time as the club’s Player of the Season.

14th September 2016 | Brentford and the Championship came calling in 2016 and the goalkeeper went straight in as number one and celebrated a draw across the West Midlands at Villa Park early on.

28th January 2017 | A first experience of a Premier League stadium came in the following January, with Bentley taking on Chelsea in the Emirates FA Cup, with the Bees beaten at Stamford Bridge.

14th October 2017 | Bentley played consistently during his time at Brentford and kept 15 clean sheets in his second season, including one in the Bees’ victory over Millwall at Griffin Park.

2nd January 2018 | The goalkeeper playing under the Molineux lights and denying Matt Doherty in a game which saw Ruben Neves on target in a 3-0 win for Wolves, who marched on to the Premier League.

30th March 2018 | Bentley’s form continued throughout the 2017/18 campaign, culminating in him being voted the London Football Awards London Goalkeeper of the Year.

23rd February 2019 | A final season with Bees saw the stopper once again perform regularly, as the club finished in the top half once again, with Bentley celebrating a big win over Hull City here.

13th August 2019 | Following the move to Bristol City, the goalkeeper was straight into saving penalties, denying Matthew Smith in a Carabao Cup shootout at QPR.

18th July 2020 | Showing bravery aplenty, Bentley saves at the feet of Conor Gallagher, on loan from Chelsea at the time, as football began to be played behind closed doors.

21st November 2020 | Bentley is congratulated by footballing legend Wayne Rooney after he kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Derby County at Ashton Gate.

3rd February 2021 | Back on his old stomping ground, Bentley returns to Brentford, albeit in their new home, with the Robins.

7th August 2021 | Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson named Bentley his captain for the 2021/22 season and the stopper took the armband for the first time on the opening day against Blackpool.

18th December 2021 | He’s at it again. Bentley once again proving heroic in penalty situations, saving from Huddersfield Town’s Danny Ward here.

10th August 2022 | Bentley continued into this season as captain and number one, seen here celebrating a Carabao Cup success at Coventry City.

8th October 2022 | The goalkeeper’s final game for Bristol City came across the West Midlands against Birmingham City.
