Cunha | 'I want a good season for us and for the fans'

Matheus Cunha believes Wolves can still improve on what they showed against FC Porto on Tuesday evening, despite earning victory in their first official pre-season friendly of the campaign.

The forward has been in impressive form during Wolves’ training matches following a return from his summer break which included a visit back home to Brazil where he spent time with his family and gave his father a special surprise gift.

Following his side securing a 1-0 win against the Portuguese giants out in the Algarve, Cunha hopes that the team is able to replicate that scoreline throughout the Premier League campaign as the players aim to keep the winning feeling alive as long as possible.

On pre-season win against Porto

“It’s been very important for us [to get more minutes on the pitch]. It’s the first game with a little bit of toughness because we were playing against a team in the Champions League. They are always a very competitive team, so it was very important for us.

“We know we need to work a little bit more, but that’s normal because we’re in the pre-season, but going with this win is very good for us.

“We see the people here and when you play with this kind of support it helps us a lot. After this win, it’s for the fans and it’s very good for us.”

On Wolves’ toughest test of the summer

“The other teams we have played are also very good, and we had difficult games, but versus Porto, they have a little bit more investment also.

“But for us, it’s important to put your head inside, know what you need to do, and after this one-zero we need to keep this up for the whole season – win every game and go home happy.”

On improving throughout pre-season

“For us, it’s very important that we look at each game and each week because with each time we come with new things and you need to learn and you need to adapt because that is very important for us.

“But we’re trying to feel really happy. I want to restart tomorrow and win a lot of games, for sure, and do a good season for us and for the fans, and do everything for Wolverhampton.”

On an enjoyable training camp

“It’s very good. We have a very good group and we always play little games after the training and the group is always together.

“I think we can take this vibe to the pitch and, sure, we would like very good work like today.”

On gifting his father a beach house

“I always miss going to Brazil and seeing my family and friends, so it’s very good to pass this time in Brazil. It’s perfect. I recovered a lot and now I’m here to do everything for my team and for my friends and I think I have very good support for me.

“[His father] worked for all of us, supporting us for all our lives, he gave me everything to be here now, so if I have something that I could give back, I need to do it.

“I was very happy for this, I’m very happy for everything my family have done to support me and I’m very happy to have done this for my father – I think he’s a little bit happy for this too.”
