Doherty | 'It was like I hadn’t been away'

Matt Doherty said it felt like he’d never been away after he got back on the scoresheet for Wolves in front of the South Bank on Tuesday evening.

Making his second debut for the club, after returning in the summer, the Irishman scored twice in two second half minutes to help Wolves cruise past Blackpool in the second round of the Carabao Cup. Hungry to get back and take his opportunity, Doherty impressed throughout, and he hopes the win can continue to build momentum, moving into Crystal Palace away on Sunday.

On getting back out in old gold

“It feels pretty good. I’ve been lacking minutes at the start of the season, so I knew tonight was an opportunity to play well and in a new role as well, playing in a three at the back and then I obviously got moved to wing-back in the second half and I’m happy to contribute.”

On getting on the scoresheet

“Honestly, it felt normal. It was like I hadn’t been away. Look, I never celebrate too hard when I score, that’s the type of person I am, but it felt good.”

On building momentum

“Obviously we won the last game, Everton away, and won again today. We want to get on a little roll and beat Palace on Sunday before the international break and it’ll give everyone a lot of confidence to come back and go again.”

On a possible Carabao Cup run

“I don’t know how many rounds there are before you end up in the final and it’s something we want to do, we want to go as far as possible in everything, the league and all the cup competitions, so this is a pretty good start.”
