Matheus Cunha says he cannot wait to experience a Black Country derby, after his extra time penalty finally saw off Brentford at Molineux.
The Brazilian fired home from 12 yards, as 210 minutes of FA Cup tie against the Bees eventually finished the way of the Old Gold, after the hosts twice came from behind. While attention turns back to the Premier League initially, Cunha was able to enjoy the moment come full-time, as Wolves’ FA Cup campaign continues with the most exciting of ties next up.
On setting up a big Black Country derby
“A lot of fans said we needed to win because it’s a big derby. I’m very happy to play derbies, I’ve played Brazil Argentina, Real Madrid Atletico Madrid, and now I really want to play Wolves West Brom and make history.”
On a monumental effort
“I feel very good. We ran a lot, we did the job we needed to do today to go to the next step, helping the team with assists and goals, but most importantly running, these kinds of things make me very happy.
“It was incredible. After every goal they scored, it was a little bit harder to come back and try to do everything more. It changed the game, but the group is incredible, we showed this in a lot of games, and it’s another game to be confident in this group, this team.”
On an incredible shift from the group
“The last game we lost one player, Joao, and we kept fighting. We scored to get a draw to come back at home and at home it’s completely different. It was a big battle, but we are very happy to win the battle, and now we need to be prepared to win more games.
“Everyone in the stadium can see, we are on the pitch and tired, everything against us, but this kind of energy gives us something more to continue run and battle. The last goal was a trophy for everybody.
“I was completely exhausted, more tired than normal, but everything is OK. The team is the most important thing. Everyone can be a little bit more confident in the team.”
On his assists and goal
“It’s good, you always want to contribute to help the team, and games like today make me more happy than normal.
“The [VAR] wait makes to anxious, but you have to be calm and focused, and everybody told me to be focused. I was training with Bentley and every goalkeeper in the team is very good, and to go into the games makes it easier.”
