Cunha | 'I scored this goal for everyone'

Matheus Cunha hopes his late equaliser at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday will “change everything” in Wolves’ season.

The Brazilian fired home a vital equaliser three minutes into stoppage time to earn Wolves their second point of the season, after another battling performance looked set to go unrewarded. However, the away dressing room was a more positive one come full-time and the goal scorer hopes it’s now the start of a positive run of form for the Old Gold.

On a dramatic ending

“It was crazy, but I feel like in the last games we’ve had a little bit of luck out. We played well and in the end of the game they scored, and you think only against us this happens. But today football showed when you keep going, when you work, it's coming. Of course, it’s not three points but I think it's a very important point to change your situation.

“It's very important because this point, I think, changes everything now. I hope next game we’ll give the best, like today, and we're a little bit better in front of the goal to score some goals and then keep pushing.”

On the big equaliser

“It’s hard to say now because I didn’t want to shoot, I only went with the ball and then waited for someone in a better position to pass the ball, and maybe they score, but of course, when I see I'm in front of the goal, I had the feeling to shoot the ball. It was a little bit lucky to hit someone, but it's a very important goal.

“I said to him, ‘Tommy, thank you very much’, because I think the action when he defended is more important than him passing the ball to me, because it's four against one and he waited and then had the time to make the best decision to pass the ball to me, and I scored this goal for everyone. I said to him, ‘It’s your goal, it’s not mine’.”

On celebrating with the away end

“The fans are unbelievable. It's hard to say something, because they keep pushing us. We are in a very hard situation, but they are behind the house, we keep pushing and this point is for them.”

On the boost it provides

“We keep going. Of course, we did it well. Honestly, I feel like when we lose, no one thinks about what you did, only thinking about your result, but inside of the club, we know we keep going. When you feel the people around you are giving everything to help you, you feel things will come in.

“You need to keep going, give everything and everyone in the club feels it’s a little bit hard because we were last in the table and to keep going like this. We believe a lot inside of the group, and after this point, I hope every single thing will come in and we’ll show everyone we are prepared to play for big things.”
