Doyle | 'That's got to be the start of something'

Tommy Doyle says Saturday’s comeback from two goals down at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday has to be the “start of something”.

The midfielder played a starring role in Matheus Cunha’s injury time equaliser at the Amex, producing a crucial interception and providing the assist for the Brazilian to fire home. The Old Gold now return home for back-to-back Molineux fixtures against Crystal Palace and Southampton, and Doyle has called on the group to use the momentum from Saturday’s draw in a positive way come Saturday evening.

On kicking on from Saturday’s draw

“We can't hide from what's happened this season, it's obviously been massively below average. So, that's got to be the start of something for us. Massive point, massive support from the fans, and we’ve got to take that now and go into the next games and start how we finished.”

On a dramatic ending at Brighton

“A lot of mixed emotions. But I think that shows perfectly the fight that this team has. Obviously, I should have scored in the first half, which frustrated me a lot and then we concede see two goals, and the second one was really deflating. But, when you look around and you see lads still with their heads up high and the chins up, with the body language, it was, ‘Let's go again’. And that's what we did. So, to take a point, obviously we're buzzing and two big games now where we've got to look at nothing but three points.”

On his crucial inspiration

“To be fair I knew what he was going to do. I think sometimes it can be just as difficult for them as it is for me, because there's four of them. I took a gamble, which obviously was worth taking, and I come out the other end with an assist. Obviously, that makes me feel a lot better and it’s a massive point.

“Amazing for the fans that travelled, to give them something because their support was amazing. At 2-0 it's difficult to stick with us after recent results that we've had, so I'm so happy that we turned it around and gave them something to cheer about.

“That's what it's all about, those fine margins. The game is all about moments and obviously buzzing that he's put it in. Never mind what I did, it was a full effort from the team – we worked really hard. We covered some distance there and that's what it's all about. We said before the game that to not get done in any department, whether that's work rate, tackles, second balls, and whatever happens, we just keep going, and that was a perfect example.”

On a pleasing performance overall

“I thought we played some good stuff. First half was difficult, but then the gaffer made some changes in the second half to tweak a few things. Second half felt a lot easier. We started playing some good stuff, I had a bit more time to be able to start hitting ‘diags’ and really hurting them. If not, we were finding Cunha and Pablo in the pockets and when you get them players in them pockets, you know sooner or later you're going to create something.”

On the change in formation

“I think it helped. Obviously, we changed from a five to a four, which helped massively. We got Carlos on with his pace to get at Veltman and just tweaked them little things. We started being a little bit calmer in possession and that obviously stopped them from pressing. The first half we were a little bit rushed. We were going long a bit and it was giving them the bait to go and press and second half I think we killed that. They had to drop and if you give some of us time, we can hurt you, so happy with how it all planned out.”
