Matheus Cunha is hoping Ruben Neves’ visit to Molineux on Saturday will not be his last with the Brazilian believing his former captain brought the team a bit of luck in the win over Southampton.
Wolves’ 2-0 win against the Saints – in which Cunha scored a stunning second – was their first of the Premier League campaign as well as their first clean sheet since February, while the game marked Neves’ first return to the Black Country since his move from the club in 2023, and Cunha hopes the three points can be a starting point to turning their season around.
On scoring an important second goal
“Every single time I do my best to help my team. I know I'm very important for these guys, but always, I think I need to improve more and then try my best on the pitch.”

On a first win of the season
“It’s obviously been a long journey to get these first three points in the season, but we know and we’ve known since the beginning, that we will try our best to keep going like this.
“Right now, we need to enjoy it a little bit, because it was also tough to get these three points.”
On Ruben Neves’ return to Molineux
“I think we need to bring him here more because he gave us luck! He was so important when I first came here and he helped me a lot.
“He was the captain at the point and he helped everyone. A lot of the guys who are here now, they came in when he was the captain, and he helped everyone.
“Hopefully he's happy because he’s always supported us, and I hope he can come back many more times to give us luck.”
On facing a Southampton side who like to keep possession
“They played very well. I love to play with the ball, but then, when you see this kind of teams play with a lot of power, and they believe a lot in their mentality to play like this.
“We needed that second goal, but of course, it's hard because they don’t give you a lot of the ball, but it's so beautiful how they play. But in football, it's like how it is in life, everyone only ever thinks about the results.”
On moving up the table
“We know every single game in Premier League is so hard, and even though they’ve gone below us now, we’re still in the relegation zone, so I hope we can change the situation.
“We know they are very good and we need to keep very focused, to come to this game and we did it. Of course, these three points, like I said, are very important for our journey.”
