Tommy Doyle admits the Wolves players need to have some honest conversations with each other after their latest defeat at home to Ipswich Town.
The Old Gold suffered another late loss as the Tractor Boys capitalised on Wolves’ set-piece frailties to find the net from a corner in the closing moments of the contest at Molineux, and Doyle believes that Wolves are ‘shooting themselves in the foot’ with the way they are currently conceding.
On the feeling inside the changing room
“It's obviously a tough place to be. It’s difficult at this moment in time to put into words the feeling, but we need to improve – that's pretty clear. But we've got to be better than that. That’s the be all and end all.
“It's frustrating that we conceded another set piece again. But I think our overall play, we deserved to win the game. But if you don't put them chances away, and then you concede from a set-piece, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.
“I’m so disappointed, for the fans, most importantly, because they stick by us, and at this moment in time, we're giving them nothing, as in results to go by, but we need to now get back to the training pitch, keep giving 110 per cent, every day, give them more than what we've been giving and hopefully we can turn this around.”
On first half struggles
“I don't think we really had much control in the first half. We were making mistakes with our passing and stuff like that, which, if you do that, you're not giving yourself a chance. But second half, I thought the intensity was a lot better. The willingness was a lot better.
“The non-negotiables of football were a lot better, which we have to improve on. But we gave a lot more – like we should do – and with the chances, you're constantly pushing and pushing, so then, at the end, to concede a set-piece again is really frustrating.”
On conceding with the last kick
“That's on us. We've got to have these conversations now and be honest with each other. We've got to look each other in the eye every single day and ask are we giving everything we can to improve and become a better team and a better club? At this moment in time, there's obviously going to be questions asked, and rightly so.
“We've got to get back to the training pitch, and as players, we've got to have these conversations with each other because we're a tight knit group and I really do believe that we can turn this around. As players, as leaders, we have to step up.
“If I can do that myself, then I will, I'll take it upon myself to be that person, and hopefully we can turn this around because the fans deserve are a lot more.”
On ugly scenes after full time
“Tensions are high. When you're not winning football games, tensions are really high and this can happen.
“When you care so much, things can boil over, and that's what happened at the end. But that's life, and we've got more things to worry about than that.”
On conceding another set-piece goal
“It's obviously something that we're looking at, but we obviously need to improve on it. There's nothing more I can say on that really. We have to improve and that's the be on the end all.”
