Gomes | 'I have really good chemistry with Guedes'

Rodrigo Gomes enjoyed his first taste of the FA Cup on Saturday, scoring in Wolves’ third round win at Bristol City.

The Portuguese netted the Old Gold’s second goal, after Rayan Ait-Nouri had opened the scoring, and it proved decisive as Vitor Pereira’s side battled out a 2-1 win at Ashton Gate.

Deployed on the left on Monday, Gomes was on the right come Saturday lunchtime, and it allowed him to link up with Goncalo Guedes for the crucial second goal, leaving the youngster beaming come full-time.

On progressing in the FA Cup

“It was a very good game. We started very well, scored two goals, and we did a very good game. Close to half-time we conceded the goal and didn't want to concede a goal, we wanted a clean sheet.

“But in the second half we controlled almost all the game. We had two big chances to score off the post, but we did a very good game, a compact game. We improved things we needed to improve, and now we need to rest and prepare for the next game.”

On linking up Guedes

“It's like chemistry. I have really good chemistry with Guedes. We scored a very good goal, me and Guedes, and we need that pace. We need that place to score goals, to make an assist, to improve our game, and I feel very happy.

“In this area, I needed to score. I touched and I tried to score. It was a very good goal. I'm very, very happy.”

On being resilient second half

“We defended very good. We know Bristol City were playing at home, it's normal at 2-1 that they want to press more. They want to play more and try to score the second goal. We tried be more compact, not leaving space behind or between the lines. I think we did really well, because we didn’t allow them to score a goal. That's important thing. We won 2-1, so we keep moving.”

On his versatility

“Last year I played in the both sides too. It's OK if the manager wants to play me on the left or the right. I give everything every game to help the team.”

On his first taste of the FA Cup

“This is a cup everyone talks about around the world, in Portugal. It's a very historic cup. Of course, I want to be in the final to play at Wembley. Let's see, game by game, step by step.”
