Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new five-year contract.
The midfielder, whose deal includes a 12-month option, has grown into a key member of the Wolves squad in his two years in England and become a full Brazil international, while making 80 appearances in old gold.
Gomes had never played outside of his boyhood club Flamengo until his Molineux switch in January 2023, however a debut goal at Southampton – a winner three minutes from time – instantly endeared him to the Old Gold faithful and made him the youngest ever Brazilian to score in the Premier League.
During those first four months in the West Midlands, Gomes, affectionately known as ‘The Pitbull’, gained a taste for the level, while helping the club to Premier League survival, coming on strong at the business end of the campaign.
Last season was the Brazilian’s first as a regular in England. Gomes, bringing high energy levels and bite to the midfield, missed just four matches and enjoyed his finest hour in the capital, scoring both goals as Wolves beat Tottenham Hotspur.
That form made him the Old Gold’s first ever Brazilian international while at Molineux, and he quickly settled at international level during a debut win over England at Wembley – one of ten caps to date, the latest coming against Argentina last week.
Last season’s consistency levels have continued into this, where the arrival of compatriot Andre has given Gomes further licence to support attacks. His four goals to date are a season best for the midfielder, who is now adding attacking returns to his game.
Head coach Vitor Pereira said: “I’m very happy because Joao is a team player. He gives every time 100 per cent, in training, in the games, and he has the quality to help this team and this club to make the next step.
“At the end of the game he’s given everything for the team, defending, attacking, supporting the teammates, and this is what we need in our team, this is the spirit we need at this club. We must come to Wolverhampton with this hunger, this spirit to help the team, help the club to grow up.
“He’s very important because he’s a midfielder with physicality and the power to run for 90 minutes, and he’s young. He has big potential and can be a top player.”
