Wolves fight back for Leeds draw

Wolves 2 (Ashley-Seal 41, Cundle 66) Leeds United 2 (McKinstry 21, 37)

Wolves under-23s missed out on the chance to make it three wins out of three in the Premier League Cup after settling for a draw against Leeds United after coming back from two goals down at Compton Park.

The first chance of the afternoon fell Wolves’ way when Dion Sanderson made a bursting run from defence before playing a neat one-two with Cundle as the defender made his way into the Leeds penalty area, before firing wide of Kamil Miazek’s upright.

Against the run of play, Leeds took the lead when Owen Otasowie was disposed on the left wing and after Bobby Kamwa raced through on goal, his shot was saved by Andreas Sondergaard, but Stuart McKinstry was in the right place to put the rebound back across goal and into the bottom corner of the net.

The goal gave Leeds momentum and they almost capitalised on their best spell of the game with the second of the afternoon, when visiting captain Ryan Edmondson sent a shot towards goal, but Wolves were saved by the post before the ball could be cleared from danger.

Miazek was Leeds’ saviour as he made a great double save to deny Ryan Giles and Ashley-Seal, and from those saves, the visitors raced from one end of the pitch to the other, but Sondergaard could only palm McCalmont’s shot into the path of McKinstry who doubled his tally by tapping the ball into an open net from a matter of yards.

However, it didn’t take Wolves long to get back into the game when Ashley-Seal outmuscled the defence before sliding the ball past Miazek.

Wolves fought back in the second-half and had their well-deserved equaliser when Cundle netted from a cute angle following good work by Giles. Chem Campbell, seconds after coming on as a substitute for Renat Dadashov, could have put Wolves ahead for the first time in the match, but he placed the ball over the crossbar from the edge of area with his first touch.

With the game heading into the final five minutes, Ashley-Seal let the chance to double his tally and give his side all three points when he had a chance from six yards out after Campbell’s shot was spilled by Miazek, but the striker could only place his effort wide of the post.
