Farmer | On scoring and assisting for the 21s

Owen Farmer says he focused on doing what he does best after being given the opportunity to start for the under-21s against Reading.

The striker has impressed at under-18 level this season and was given his chance to start up front in the Premier League Cup clash on Friday afternoon. And the 17-year-old didn’t disappoint, scoring the opener and assisting the second goal as the old gold walked away from Aggborough with all three points. Farmer admitted he enjoys being a pest to opposition defenders and that he was ready for his moment to step up with the 21s.

On being ready for the game and scoring

“I thought it was going to be a tough game. I wasn’t really expecting to get a chance to score like that, it was so easy for me to put it past the keeper.

“I was ready for it and I found it a tough game. It was hard to get on the ball, but it was a good one.

“I did everything that I’ve been doing in the 18s today and I’ve got to be thankful to Sharpsy to be able to start.”

On being given the opportunity

“I’ve been coming off the bench the last few games and today I got the chance to start. It was more about if I can do what I’ve been doing in the 18s here and step up.

“The goal helps, it always helps. Pestering defenders is what I’ve been doing well this season. Not many defenders like running in behind, so I take that into my game and try to do it as much as I can.

“With my size, coming to feet and trying to hold the ball up isn’t really for me. Running in behind suits me and when defenders don’t like it, it’s even better.”

On opening the scoring

“It all starts with Mich winning the first contact. They’re running towards their own goal and I’ve just got to do my best to get my body in the way of them and the ball, try and wriggle and find a situation where I can score.

“I think I miskicked it to be fair, but that put the keeper off and made it easy for it to go in the net.”

On assisting Lee Harkin’s second

“It was a great finish and I knew that with the pace he has, as soon as I played that ball in, to get in the box ready for the rebound. I knew he’d get closer to the goal to get a chance.

“I had a few chances. I was disappointed with my second header – I thought I should’ve scored that.

“It’s a positive to know I’m getting chances and creating chances for the team.”

On the next game

“Hopefully more minutes and another win for the team. Scoring goals is great but inevitably the three points is all that matters at the end of the day.

“To get three points in the first game today is a great start.”
