Dylan Scicluna’s first goal of the season saw Wolves maintain their 100 per cent record in the Premier League Cup, as Sunderland were defeated in Telford on Monday afternoon.
The substitute pounced on a poor clearance inside the Black Cats’ penalty area to nod home, following good work by Owen Farmer, and that piece of intuition was enough to make it two wins from two for the old gold.
Fresh from their winning start in the same competition on Friday, when Reading were manoeuvred past, the old gold headed to New Bucks Head and started well, with Michael Agboola heading Aaron Keto-Diyawa’s cross over with the best chance of the opening half hour.
As for the Black Cats, their best opening came from a strong Tom Watson run, which carried the winger into the Wolves penalty area and his powerful strike needed palming over the crossbar by Wolves stopper Andreas Sondergaard.

Later in the half, Owen Farmer had a shot deflected behind by the Sunderland defence, concluding a first half of little note, but one which gave the old gold a platform to build from.

At the break, Ian Sharps made a double substitution, with Alfie Pond and Scicluna brought on from the bench, and it was the latter who broke the deadlock when Farmer’s cross wasn’t dealt with by the Sunderland defence and Scicluna pounced to nod home the loose ball from close range.

Quickly after that goal, Ethan Kachosa’s cross ran deep for Caden Kelly and his whipped effort came back off the outside of the post, before Michael Spellman took aim from 20 yards and called Sondergaard into action with a diving save.
Either side of the goal, Jack Hodnett tested Jacob Carney in the Sunderland goal, while Farmer will have been disappointed to not caonnect properly with Harry Birtwistle’s cross, as his effort flew wide of the mark, before Lee Harkin blazed his own attempt over the bar, as Wolves made it two wins from two in the Premier League Cup.
