Owen Hesketh feels his productivity in front of goal has benefitted from playing higher up the pitch this season.
The under-21s attacking midfielder scored his seventh goal of the season in all competitions at Leicester City on Monday evening as James Collins’ side won for the third game in a row. Despite not being at their best performance wise, Hesketh believes that still coming out with the three points is a good trait to have within the dressing room.
On getting the three points
“It was a good result getting the three points. The game, 3-1, was probably generous. We’ve certainly been better this season and it wasn’t one of our best performances, but that’s a good attribute to have when you’re not playing your best but you still get the three points.
“The lads touched on it in the changing room when we all got back in. We all agreed that we could do things better and that’s something we’ll look to work on in training and try and get the performances to match the results.”
On enjoying their football and looking to improve
“We’re enjoying our football and we’re getting some good wins. The performances, we all want to improve on it, but it’s a good thing that we’re still getting those wins and not coming away having not performed well and got beat as well.
“We’re hard on ourselves, but that’s what you’ve got to do in order to improve. You’re not going to improve by forgetting about it because you won – you’ve got to look at it and try and improve on it.”
On his goal
“It was (well worked). Owen Farmer down the left who slid it through to Matty (Whittingham) who picked me out in the box and then I managed to get on the end of it and put it away.
“The other two goals, we were very clinical tonight. We didn’t get many chances but when they did come, we put them away and that’s a good thing. We need to keep doing that and if we do create more chances, carry on being that clinical and hopefully we get more goals.”
On playing further forward
“When I’ve played further forward I feel like I can break into the box, get on the end of some crosses and score goals.
“It’s probably my better position playing further up because I feel like I can influence the game more with goals and assists.
“I’ll happily play deeper if that’s where I need to play to help the team out. I feel like I can do a lot more and influence the game with goals so hopefully I can carry on playing there and keep getting in the goals.”
On the schedule before Christmas
“We keep training. I think we’ve got a game every week so they’re not coming as thick and fast as they were, but training’s just as important.
“We work on the things that we need to work on and try and get better as a team. Hopefully when the games do come around we can carry on this run of form, keep getting wins and hopefully we can win every one before Christmas – that’s what we’ll be trying to do and I’m sure the team will be wanting to do that as well.”
