BSM Trophy report | Wrexham 3-0 Wolves U21s

Wrexham 3 (Brunt 22, Mullin 38, Faal 57) Wolves U21s 0

Wolves under-21s were well-beaten at Wrexham in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Lewis Brunt, Paul Mullin and Mo Faal scored the goals at the Racecourse Ground as the League One side secured the group stage points.

Wrexham had the first sighting on goal when a set-piece was delivered into the box and Faal rose highest, but could only divert his header over the crossbar.

James Jones was then afforded space on the edge of the area and lined up an effort, but Tom King was equal to it as he batted the ball away from danger.

The home side made their pressure pay on the 22-minute mark as Anthony Forde’s free-kick into the box was met by the boot of Brunt who finished from a few yards out.

Ty Barnett had the Old Gold’s best opening of the half when a free-kick was won by Luke Cundle around 25 yards out, however Barnett was unable to keep his effort underneath the crossbar.

Wrexham scored a second seven minutes before the interval, and it was a classy finish from Mullin who was able to double the advantage, latching onto a ball over the top by Forde before lifting his effort over King for two.

Half-time | Wrexham 2-0 Wolves U21s

Phil Parkinson’s side made it three just shy of the half hour and it was Faal who added his name to the scoresheet with an acrobatic effort. After Forde’s cross could only be cleared backwards by Alfie Pond, Faal was waiting to strike with a stylish overhead kick that beat King in the away goal.

Wolves went quickly up the other end in search of a goal back to give them some hope, but Ethan Sutherland’s header was comfortable enough for Callum Burton after the defender was picked out at the back post by fellow full-back Wes Okoduwa.

James Collins reacted with a triple change on 62 minutes with Fletcher Holman, Tom Edozie and Temple Ojinnaka all introduced by the head coach.

King had to be alert to deny Wrexham a fourth when Mullin peeled away at the back post from a corner and directed his header downwards, but King was equal to it to push the ball behind for another corner.

Substitute Holman was presented with a huge chance to pull a goal back for Wolves after Edozie did well to win the ball back and play in the striker, but he fired over Burton’s bar.

The substitutes gave the Old Gold more impetus in the final third in the closing stages, with Lopes showing neat flashes including an attempt that was well-saved on his line by Burton, but Wrexham had the points wrapped up by that point.
