National League Cup preview | Oldham vs Wolves U21s

Wolves under-21s begin their National League Cup campaign away to Oldham Athletic on Wednesday evening.

James Collins takes his youngsters to Boundary Park as the Old Gold play in the competition for the first time following its introduction this season.

Wolves are in Group B and as well as facing the Latics, will also travel to Forest Green Rovers, Rochdale and Altrincham from the fifth tier of English football.

The National League Cup is designed to give young players from Premier League and EFL clubs additional opportunities to test themselves against senior opposition, with the aim of further aiding elite player development.

The 32-team midweek competition comprises of 16 under-21 teams participating in Premier League 2, and 16 first teams from clubs participating in the National League.

The competition consists of a group stage (four groups of eight), with the two best-placed teams in each group advancing to a knock-out stage to determine the winner.

Like with the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, three points are awarded for a victory and should the game end in a draw, a penalty shootout will take place to determine which side earns the additional point.

Wolves come into the game on the back of Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Liverpool in PL2, while Oldham progressed into the second round of the Emirates FA Cup following an impressive 2-1 victory at League Two side Tranmere Rovers.

Managed by Micky Mellon, Oldham currently sit fifth in the National League table, are unbeaten in five and have lost just twice all season.

The Latics have already played one game in the National League Cup and defeated Stoke City U21s by two goals to one at the start of October.
